ENHANCING THE FAN EXPERIENCE THROUGH VR WITH FOOT TRACKING TECHNOLOGY

We partnered with Prisma VR Studio to create an interactive VR football game for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, complete with foot tracking technology. Following the success of the activation last summer, we rolled out an exclusive new update for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

We created this immersive VR football experience for FIFA World Cup sponsors Wanda as a branded event activation for them to host in fan zones across Moscow during the World Cup. Players take part in a virtual football tournament, hitting targets in a training round before progressing to aim, shoot and score against the goalie.

First up, we sculpted a full CGI environment, including an exact replica of the famous Dangzhai village built by Wanda in China, and used Unreal Engine to implement. We incorporated HTC VIVE trackers to monitor all foot movements during the experience, allowing players to see their own feet in the game and kick the virtual ball accurately at various targets to score points.

The experience gave World Cup fans the opportunity to understand just how far players have to go on their journey to reach the world stage.  An interactive leaderboard was kept updated throughout the tournament, with total scores being submitted for the chance to win exclusive prizes provided by Wanda.

The activation was hosted in the main fan zone and the Red Square zone at the FIFA 2018 World Cup, with over 3300 football fans playing VR Superstar in the space of just three weeks. Due to overwhelming success in Moscow, the experience was also rolled out at the Women’s World Cup in Lyon this summer. We enhanced the experience, shortening it slightly to allow for higher footfall and also creating dynamic new female CGI characters with updated kits in order to celebrate the power and diversity of women’s football.
