Happy Finish collaborated with Ogilvy, Bombay Sapphire and renowned designer, Yinka Ilori to explore the artistic application of AI at this year’s Frieze Festival. 

The project was inspired by recent research carried out by Bombay Sapphire, asking the question of technology's role in creativity. The research showed that almost 50% of the UK population said that technology encourages them to be more creative. With that in mind, we set out to create something unique using Yinka’s art, Bombay Sapphire imagery and artificial intelligence for this year’s Frieze Art Festival in London. 

In this project, we tested two AI approaches to see what process would deliver the most creative output:

  1. Neural Style Transfer - uses two images (one content and one style reference) and blends them together so the output image looks like the content image but in the style of the other image.
  2. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) -train the machine with a series of input images and they create new data set instances that resemble/mimic the training data.

In close collaboration with Yinka, we developed upon the GAN technique, feeding the machine with more of Yinka’s art and Bombay Sapphire imagery to create a new data set of artwork.  The series of compelling new work truly embody Yinka’s characteristic style, facilitated by cutting-edge technology, showcasing the possibilties of what can happen when technology is part of the creative process.

The beauty of AI is that it generated new content based on its memory of my illustrations that had been fed into an algorithm, there is something quite fascinating about this process and the theme of memory, as a huge part of my practice involves investigating how colour can be used as a form of memory to tell new stories.
