Welcome back to the second in our “Best of the Tests” series, where we celebrate some of the most exciting and innovative collaborations and test images that our fantastic represented artists work on.
It was a clear choice this month; up and coming photographer Rosaline Shahnavaz and our very own retouch artist Jackie Williams collaborated on this intimate portrayal of Rosaline’s friend, Fern, who was photographed by Rosaline numerous times over the course of a year. In a book celebrated as an insight into womanhood, friendship and youth, Shahnavaz enlisted Jackie to help enhance her images through subtle retouching.
In their first collaboration together, Rosaline spoke of the importance of starting their relationship with a personal project so Jackie could really develop a strong understanding of Rosaline’s practice. They clicked straight away and have both found it beneficial to have the same approach with Rosaline’s commissioned work.
Speaking about their relationship, Rosaline said “Jackie has a great eye for my way of working. My photographs are personal and intimate, so I steer away from any image manipulation. It’s more of a case of polishing off and refining.” Each photo tells a story, capturing the in-between moments of life that are often dismissed – by amplifying shade and light, Jackie was able to subtly enhance the images for a natural looking finish.
