Sleeping Beauty from every angle
Objective: The English National Ballet wanted a socially interactive way to promote their upcoming production “The Sleeping Beauty” at The Coliseum. The turn around had to be extremely fast as filming took place during the technical rehearsal, one day before the opening. Working in a slightly unconventional way, a 360° video was produced targeting Facebook and YouTube audiences.
Our Approach: Due to the rapid 24 hour turnaround time, we had to keep the production smart but simple. However, we still wanted to push the boundaries and move away from a linear 360° video. To create an exciting production which an audience could explore and dance around, we used two camera angles at different points in the theatre: one high in the gantry and the other behind the conductor. The cameras were selected for their low light capability meaning we could guarantee exceptional 6K quality even in the darkest part of the show.
The videos were then taken and composited together by our VFX department, creating an interesting yet surreal video sphere that was different from every angle. Two videos were created, one for each of the chosen dances: “The Vision” and “Garland Dance”. Look down for a birds eye view of the dancers, or spin around to enjoy the performance from the orchestra pit.
